Dog Lodge Sanctuary is a Texas-based 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to providing a permanent home for senior and/or special needs dogs that otherwise might face a very bleak future but in the right environment can still lead a quality life. We are focused on providing a safe, loving, healthy and stable environment for our dogs so that they may know peace and dignity for the rest of their lives. The primary function of Dog Lodge is to come to the rescue of dogs that are, for all intents and purposes, considered “unadoptable” because of advanced age or because they have chronic illness or physical disabilities. The Sanctuary is an alternative to life on the streets, abuse, neglect, fighting, and euthanasia. Here is an opportunity for those dogs to be in a place where they can belong; where they can be happy, where all of their special needs can be met – where they can love and be loved.
There are many fine rescue and shelter operations but sometimes they are faced with the issue of what to do with a dog that is continually overlooked for adoption for any one of a variety of reasons. There are so many dogs currently in rescue and shelter facilities, dogs that have an excellent chance of being adopted, that there is virtually no room for dogs that have little chance of being adopted. Dog Lodge takes dogs in on a case-by-case basis from local and non-local shelters, humane societies, non-profit rescues, and puppy mills and retired service dogs and retired military dogs. Each new arrival will go through an assessment to determine 1) health needs, both immediate and long-term; 2) any behavioral issues that may be relevant; and 3) any other issues that may need attention in the immediate or long-term. Once the specific needs have been determined, the dog will receive the necessary medical care, and any physical or emotional rehabilitation necessary.
We at Dog Lodge Sanctuary are grateful for the opportunity to be involved with so many fine organizations that are working very hard to make a difference and bring about change. Our prayer is that one day all dogs will be safe and loved. In the meantime, we will continue to do our small part - one day at a time, one dog at a time.
A time when the rescue community works together thinking and acting outside the box to arrive at viable alternatives to killing dogs in an effort to control the “overpopulation problem”. A time when we live in a compassionate world in which the value of every dog as a companion is recognized and all dogs are ensured a life free of cruelty and inhumane treatment.
